Authentic Youth Partnership
Authentic Youth Partnership (AYP) is GOYN’s equity-centered framework for engaging Opportunity Youth (OY), ages 15-35, as co-designers and co-leaders of systems change.
AYP is not traditional youth engagement. It is a mutually respectful partnership between OY and adults where:
- Power and responsibility are shared.
- Lived experience is treated as expertise.
- OY are primary designers, implementers, and leaders of programs and initiatives.
- Systemic inequalities are actively addressed.
Grounded in Positive Youth Development and youth-adult partnership models, AYP shifts beyond individual development to advance equity, systems change, and justice-centered leadership.
Core Principles of Authentic Youth Partnership

Shared Power & Mutual Respect
Opportunity Youth and adults are equal partners, with shared power and responsibility. Adults validate OY ideas and experiences and create safe spaces for open expression. For AYP to be effective, mutual respect, reciprocity, and shared influence must be upheld.

OY as Primary Designers and Leaders
AYP positions OY as primary designers, implementers, and leaders of initiatives. Adults shift into supportive roles as allies and mentors—removing barriers and providing access to resources, social capital, and connections to decision-makers in government, community leadership, and business.

Valuing Lived Experience
AYP recognizes that OY—especially those most proximate to community issues—hold deep understanding of the challenges they face. Their lived experience is a valuable asset in designing effective, locally grounded solutions.

Equity & Structural Justice
AYP actively addresses structural inequities—racial injustice, socioeconomic exclusion, gender discrimination, documentation barriers, care responsibilities, and access gaps.
The goal is not only participation—it is institutional change.
Approach
GOYN’s AYP pathway approach is a comprehensive 12-month capacity-building process designed to empower Opportunity Youth through a sequence of structured phases

Capacity Building Phase
Build shared readiness for authentic youth partnership. OY and adult partners align on shared power, roles, and goals—while OY strengthen skills in equity, leadership, and design to lead effectively.
Civic Action Phase
OY put learning into practice through real community projects. With support from adult allies and local partners, OY design and implement solutions rooted in lived experience and community assets.
Educate & Advocate Phase
OY translate action into influence. OY share evidence, stories, and recommendations with stakeholders and decision-makers—advancing OY-informed practices, partnerships, and policy or systems change.
Why Authentic Youth Partnership Matters
AYP drives measurable change across multiple levels. Through AYP, OY shape their own futures while transforming the communities and systems around them.
- For OY: AYP nurtures agency, leadership, and civic engagement—helping OY discover purpose, build resilience, and expand pathways to economic opportunity. It strengthens belonging, meaning, and well-being, equipping OY to thrive personally and professionally.
- For Institutions: By engaging OY as true partners, AYP strengthens program relevance, improves retention, aligns with employer needs, and supports stronger coordination across local ecosystems.
- For Systems: AYP drives structural change by dismantling barriers that limit OY opportunity, shifting narratives to highlight OY strengths, and generating credible evidence to inform policy and funding reform
Authentic Youth Partnerships are how GOYN ensures that youth voice becomes youth power—and youth power transforms systems.
