eThekwini, South AfricaNompumelelo Mkhize, also known as Queen, is a script writer and used to direct the drama group of her local church. She has a passion for empowering young people through performance arts. Her project is called ‘Empowering young people through Performing Arts’. It is an afterschool program for high school students. The aim of the project is to discuss social issues that young people face on a daily basis and speak out about them through performing arts – drama, poetry, dance and any other form of art. Youth Innovation Funds (YIF) will allow Queen, to purchase a camera, lights, microphone and other equipment to record all the talents that the students possess. YIF funding will minimize barriers to youth participation by covering transportation costs, data and connectivity, and will cover costs of materials young people will need to participate and complete their individual projects. This projects will give young people a voice as they tell their story through the performing arts.
